Kharkiv National University named after V.N. Karazin is one of the oldest and most famous higher educational institutions of Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
A letter of affirmation and the Charter of Kharkov University were signed on November 17, 1804. The grand opening of the university took place on January 29, 1805.
The university has the status of an autonomous and research university. Today it is an advanced powerful center of education and science. It consists of 20 faculties and 127 departments, research institutes of chemistry, biology, astronomy, the Astronomical Observatory, the Local History Center, the Bulgarian Drinkov Center for Bulgarian and Balkan Studies, the D. Bagalei Center for Ukrainian Studios, the Confucius Institute, the Botanical Garden. The museum complex includes the Museum of Nature, the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography of Slobozhansky Ukraine, the Museum of the History of the University. The Fund of the Central Scientific Library comprises over 3.5 million books.
More than 15 thousand students study at the university, including 2000 foreign students from 62 countries of the world, about 500 graduate students and doctoral students, 1,500 teachers and researchers work, including 370 doctors of science, professors and more than 1,000 candidates of science, associate professors. Among the university staff are 37 academicians and corresponding members of the NAS of Ukraine and branch academies of sciences, 56 laureates of the State Prizes of Ukraine in the field of science and technology.
The university presents all areas of modern fundamental science, operates 20 world-famous scientific schools, and 22 specialized councils for the defence of dissertations function.
The University was the forefather of many priority areas of science; it trained over 150 thousand highly qualified specialists.

It is country's first preparatory faculty for foreign citizens was created at the university. Over the years, more than 13,000 foreign citizens have received pre-university training at the preparatory department. The Institute of International Education also provides training for bachelors, masters, graduate students and doctoral students at all faculties of the university. In some faculties of the university, the teaching of foreign students in English has been introduced. The preparatory department of the Institute of International Education prepares foreign citizens for their subsequent studies not only at the university, but also in higher educational institutions of Ukraine.
he main task of the Institute is the formation of foreign students of a unified system of knowledge and level of knowledge of languages chosen by students for professional education in Ukraine.
The Institute provides internships for teachers of universities in Kharkov and other cities of Ukraine with different periods of study. To date, more than 800 teachers teaching foreign students and scientists from around the world have increased their scientific and pedagogical level within the walls of V.N.Karazin Kharkiv National University.
