Kharkiv National University named after V.N. Karazin is one of the oldest and most famous higher educational institutions of Ukraine and Eastern Europe. A letter of affirmation and the Charter of Kharkov University were signed on November 17, 1804. The grand opening of the university took place on January 29, 1805. The university has the status of an autonomous and research university. Today it is an advanced powerful center of education and science. It consists of 20 faculties and 127 departments, research institutes of chemistry, biology, astronomy, the Astronomical Observatory, the Local History Center, the Bulgarian Drinkov Center for Bulgarian and Balkan Studies, the D. Bagalei Center for Ukrainian Studios, the Confucius Institute, the Botanical Garden.
